XPLORATION – OCEANS1

A SERIOUS GAME
FOR SEAFARERS

Oceans1 is a competition for the crews of sea-going vessels with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions. With this project, OceansX wants to create a movement that contributes to the realisation of the goals as laid down by the International Maritime Organization: a fifty percent reduction by 2050 in comparison to 2008.

Oceans1 focuses on the intrinsic motivation of crew members by offering (data driven) insight, knowledge and customised support in a competitive environment. Once crews have started working together, Oceans1 integrates technical innovations into the challenge to efficiently test and effectively implement new CO2 reduction solutions.

The Royal Dutch Navy is participating in the Oceans1 CO2 Challenge with 5 ships

By providing customized support, (data-driven) insights, shared knowledge and a sporting gamified environment Oceans X ONE will boost social innovation.

Participants in the challenge will have access to an interactive digital platform. The crew that is most driven and effective in its efforts to reduce its CO2 footprint wins the race. During the challenge, competition points can be earned by sharing knowledge and experiences with other ships. The challenge takes into account vessel type and crew composition to ensure equal opportunities. Oceans1 is able to include new crews in the challenge immediately, so joining is always possible.

Niels Juel in environmental challenge

The frigate Niels Juel participates in an environmental challenge together with ships from all over the world. Watch the video where the ship must try to reduce CO2 emissions while solving their operational tasks. The entire crew at Niels Juel has been involved in the project, where everyone has the opportunity to make suggestions on how to save energy. Technical officer at Niels Juel, Nils, talks here about the measures that have been taken to reduce CO2 emissions. During the period the competition is running, the ships can get points for their actions and are placed in a ranking depending on how well they are doing in relation to the other ships.
