XPLORATION COASTLINE
A water distribution and treatment concept with global impact
A benefit and role for all
Users of water – the availability of water is a necessity for humankind to survive and thrive. Households, agricultural entrepreneurs, firefighters, healthcare facilities and/or data centers are all connected by the need for water production and treatment. Therefore water is a common good: it should be available and affordable for all (end-users) and everyone has a responsibility to use it responsibly. Xploration Coastline creates a carrier wave for an expanding learning community to efficiently and effectively match (responsible) end-user demand and availability, in decentralized way, together;
Impact makers within governmental (and international) organizations – The absence (drought) or excess (flood) of water can have a similar destabilizing effect on communities as the effects of inconsistent (local) production, treatment and/or distribution of water. Growing to more resilient communities that can cope with population growth, climate change and the need to minimize footprints in the nexus of energy, water and food, Xploration Coastline provides a hands-on approach to build (and/or explore) towards cross-sectoral and nation overarching governance structures that enable consistency, inclusivity and diversity;
Impact driven businesses and institutions – The water problem is growing exponentially. In business terms we can call that a blue ocean. New product/market combinations are foreseen and will need constant innovations, updates and research to keep water available and affordable for all, while reducing the footprint consistently. A new (technical) product alone will not make the required impact in solving the whole power-2-H2O-2-user endgame. And for the market, let’s hope water keeps its title as ‘common good’ instead of ‘ownable asset’. Xploration Coastline facilitates space for you to focus on your responsible, open and mission driven innovation while we make sure the governance structure is in place in order to make genuine and durable impact collectively. Additionally, Xploration Coastline will trigger you to explore new ways of doing business and research in order to grow towards inclusiveness and diversity as the standard.
The essence
The essence of Xploration Coastline is to match the demand of water production & treatment in the most energy efficient way for multiple small Islands and/or multinational coastline regions.
The concept
The Xploration Coastline concept describes a network of floating (mobile) water production and treatment plants (assets) that operate coordinated along a coastline or between groups of Islands. This network is centrally operated. Operations are fully automated. Data (demand, weather, logistics, maintenance, etc.) and AI optimize operations as they learn. A governance body – a committee of wise men and women with a solid support base in the region – is in place to take overall responsibility and declare priorities in case of escalation beyond routine operations.
The asset
The asset is a floating maritime water and energy microgrid and is capable of delivering 1000 cubic meters of potable water every 24 hours. The asset has a minimal footprint optimizing the integrated clean energy systems on board. The modular build enables customization of every asset depending on demand, operation mode and/or role in the Xploration Coastline network. All processes on board are automated focusing the need for human capital on predictive (and incident) maintenance and towage.
First of class
The first of class asset will be operated from Curaçao. The asset will be docked in Sint Joris baai facilitating agricultural and regional development in that area. Meanwhile the asset is stand-by to provide pre-planned, efficient and (more) sustainable Humanitarian Aid within the region. Partnerships with the local utility company and the University of Curacao have been established. An actionable plan has been worked out with policymakers of Curaçao and ratified by the Board of Ministers. Meanwhile a community of practitioners is active to, in this stage, share knowledge and experiences to act on the motto: ‘for all, by all’.
The Living Lab
The advancement of technologies in the power-2-H2O value chain will be significant. The Xploration Coastline Living Lab enables us to accommodate all new inputs – independent of their Technology Readiness Level (TRL) – and see what works better in which situation. This Living Lab will kick-off as a Minimum Viable Product situated in Aqua-dock Rotterdam. In a local public-private-partnership this Minimum Viable Product will be upgraded together with local schools, universities, institutions, entrepreneurs and government. Every 2-3 years this living lab will change locations to address different (local) challenges and engage new businesses and institutions. Interested in hosting the Living Lab in your community? Let us know!
The Governance
The multilayer governance structure of Xploration Coastline is divided over three entities: a vision-keeper, a mission-keeper and an asset responsible entity. Each entity has its responsibility and unique role within the grand Xploration. This governance structure is able to provide clarity and legality for all involved, now and for the future.
The vision is anchored in society by Foundation OceansX. Foundation OceansX is set out to unleash our collective potential around complex social challenges.
The mission is the responsibility of OceansX Ltd. An actionable entity that formulates, drives and pivots the Xploration Coastline mission, being: drive cumulative successes in line with the essence of Xploration Coastline. OceansX Ltd. has and is limited to one stakeholder being Foundation OceansX.
The asset responsibility is delegated towards a consortium of companies and/or institutions who are in charge of building, maintaining and operating the (network of) asset(s). Every consortium operates under a license (per geographical area, time, etc.) of OceansX Ltd.
